Concrete Life Cycle – From Cradle to Grave
Modern concrete is a highly sophisticated material, where it in many respects is possible to accurately engineer a broad range of specific properties, for example based on selection of the concrete ingredients, by controlling the concrete mix composition, or by appropriately operating the subsequent mixing, casting and curing process. This course aims at transferring in-depth knowledge on selected areas of concrete science and technology stretching from its design to its end-of-life. The topics dealt with include: Fresh properties, non-destructive testing, curing and hydration, industrial by-products, property development, shrinkage and cracking, standards and specifications, life cycle assessment, durability, service life evolution. The course includes three practical exercises, a study tour and various presentations given by the participants. For each course module there are preparatory readings (typically two scientific papers). In order to receive course credits (ECTS credits) participants need to make a scientific poster, give a group presentation and successfully pass a quiz which evaluates the learning outcomes from all course modules and readings. The doctoral course takes place in continuation of an ACI-NDT Specialist Certification course in the same location. It is expected that some may participate in both events, but apart from this, these two events are independent.
PhD COURSE PROGRAM
ACI – NDT COURSE DESCRIPTION, REQUIREMENTS AND PROGRAM
An ACI Nondestructive Testing Specialist for Concrete Strength determination is person who has demonstrated knowledge and ability to properly perform the six ASTM standard test methods on hardened concrete by passing the ACI certification written and performance examinations.
Everyone registering for this course must have a printed set of the following ASTM standards, to review it in detail before the course and bring it to the course, as this material will not be provided by the course organizers.
16 Standard Test Method for Pulse Velocity Through Concrete
18 Standard Test Method for Penetration Resistance of Hardened Concrete
18 Standard Test Method for Rebound Number of Hardened Concrete
15 Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Concrete Cylinders Cast in Place in Cylindrical Molds
19 Standard Test Method for Pullout Strength of Hardened Concrete
19 Standard Practice for Estimating Concrete Strength by the Maturity Method
- A copy of CP–92, 2nd Edition: Specialist Workbook for ACI Certification of Nondestructive Testing Specialist—Concrete Strength, will be provided to everyone registered for this course.
- Review of a prerecorded 4 hour session that will be available for all those who register for the course, at least one month before in-person activities begin in Monterrey
- Saturday, October 12th, laboratory practical session for review and clarification of doubts
- Sunday, October 13th, application of written and performance examinations
NOTE: Because the practical exam demands a significant amount of time, registration for this course will be limited to 50 persons. Those who decide to enroll in the RILEM PhD course are encouraged to enroll in this course, as it will be offered at a significantly reduced cost of $100 USD for students and $ 415 USD for industry assistants, since the regular cost of this course is $949 USD.

POSTER COMPETITION
The one page posters must be made in a portrait format with height-width dimensions of 2-1, should be uploaded to the web-page of the event in two files with PNG* extensions, and must include the following information:
- Title
- Names of author(s) and affiliated organization(s)
- Abstract (brief summary of objectives, methods, results, and conclusions)
- Background Information
- Project Objectives
- Materials and Methods
- Results (tables, graphs, charts)
- Conclusions
* In the following link you will find a free app to convert your PDF file to a PNG file. https://pdf2png.com/
Academic institution logos, may be displayed on the poster. If the research presented was supported by a specific funding source, i.e., a grant or a company, a written acknowledgement of the funding source may be displayed but the logo will not be included on the poster.
Include all collaborators that contributed to the body of work in the author section. Consent from all collaborators is necessary prior to the poster competition. For this purpose, a supporting letter signed by the research advisor will be required.
Poster topics should be related to one of the eight subjects to be covered in the “International Conference on Advances in Sustainable Construction Materials and Structures”:
- Supplementary cementitious materials
- Durability and Life Cycle Assessment in Urban and Marine Conditions
- Additive manufacturing of concrete in construction
- Structural Performance and Design
- Non-Portland cements and Alkali activated cementitious materials and eco-concrete
- Cultural Heritage
- Non-destructive testing techniques
- Bituminous materials, polymers, timber, bamboo, recycling, masonry, etc.
Prizes:
The selection of the winners will be made by a jury chosen by the RILEM Honorary President. In total, the competition will award 7 prizes in three different categories:
- Global Category: In this category, the winner will be invited to present/explain the work during the conference. The awardee receives a certificate signed by the RILEM TAC Chair and a 500€ prize issued by RILEM. The student’s name and title of the work will be published on the RILEM website.
